Hi
I’ve just purchased a new oven our last one was electric and now we have gone back to using a gas oven,it’s a stoves British made so flame is at the back of the oven unlike the continentals which is at the bottom, I’ve tried baking three cakes in it and each time it burns on top before the inside is cooked I’ve tried lowering the shelve and temperature, baking them as to manufacturing guides and it still burns.no one I speak to as this problem so if anyone can advice me that would be great
many thanks

Hi sueleemin
The oven may need re- calibrating even though it’s new. The best thing to do would be to contact the manufacturer directly, you won’t get any sense from high street stores. A few years ago I had a Service gas cooker which had endless problems which ruined that year’s Christmas day lunch! I thought it was me getting used to cooking on gas as I have always used electric. Cut to the chase, it transpired the oven had an inherent fault. Three months into ownership it was condemned by transco as a dangerous appliance liable to cause an explosion! At that time I went back several times to the supplier and was told no one else had reported problems. However after it was condemned I received a recall letter from the manufacturer stating the dangerous nature of the appliance. The experience frightened me so much that I went back to electric. I’m not suggesting that you have a similar problem but certainly Stoves should be contacted for advice and for calibration tests which should be covered by the warranty. In the short term try placing the cakes in the centre of the oven avoiding going too near to the back. It may also help placing a tray on the shelf above to shield the top of the cake burning. I’ve learned this in my caravan oven which is intermittent fan forced gas. Hope you soon have it sorted out.
I now made arrangements for an engineer to check the oven. Thanks for your reply makes more sense than the others I’ve seen on different sites.
Hi sueleemin
I should have also said that during my problems and before I invited tranco to look at the oven, several engineers had called, and each one said they had rectified the fault which of course they hadn’t. If your problem persists don’t hesitate to keep on to Stoves. The appliance has to be fit for purpose, if it isn’t you’re entitled to have either your money refunded or have another appliance which works properly. If you google
‘sale of goods act’ you’ll be better informed of your rights should things come to a tussle. Good luck.
