Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Taking cake to Canada
Hi everyone. I hope someone can point me in the right direction or may already know the answer to my query. My niece who lives in Canada has asked me to make her wedding cake (thrilled!) I want to bake the cakes here (UK) and take them as hand luggage then decorate in Canada. I will only have 3 days to cover, stack and decorate so this would help me enormously. Defra have said I can take cakes on board but they can’t speak for Canada who need to allow me to take the cakes off the plane! I have emailed the Canadian border agency who sent me a reply which was a copy and pasted mammoth episode from their website (I’d already read this and couldn’t understand it!) I’m now awaiting a reply from the Canadian Embassy but thought maybe one of you lovely cakers may know the answer. I just want a simple yes or no. It will be a gift and I’m not a business. Thanks so much xx

Hi wendyk
I wasn’t allowed to send spices to my niece who lives in Canada, cakes may be different. I know the authorities there are pretty strict about food stuff entering their country. The other problem of course would be the airline itself. Some airlines will not carry food in the cabin overhead lockers. Some will if it fits under the seat in front of you. This may be worth inquiring about. Canadian border agency took their time with my query, might be worth emailing them. I phoned them for a simple yes or no answer. What a palaver! Hope all works out for you.
Thanks madeitwithlove – yes maybe a phone call might get a more direct answer. X
