Can you freeze leftover uncooked madeira cake mix?

I’ve never done it so can’t give you first hand feed back. I have read in several forums that cupcake batter and scratch cake batter can be frozen and baked either from frozen or by bringing it to room temperature.
The science behind it would be that the freezing process prevents the leavening agent being activated. However, I would have thought that the defrosting process would begin to activate the leavening which may result in the cake not rising as much. It’s possible baking the batter in an un preheated oven would yield better results.
I really must try this out, if you do, your feedback would be most welcome.
