Watch in box cake

Hi I’ve been asked to make a watch in a box cake with open lid. I don’t have carpentry skills so unable to build a structure. I’ve thought about doing it with a polystyrene lid and attaching it with dowels. Is this doable? They want the cake to feed 40 so I thought 2 x 8″ square cakes. It’s the lid that is stumping me. Any advice please?

Hi gucci906

There are some lovely ideas here:

Gift Box Cake With Open Lid Tutorial

If you google ‘open gift box cake tutorial’, you see lots of other ideas.

Your own idea of a polystrene lid held up with dowels will also work. You could also do by icing a real cake box lid of the same size and letting it dry completely before introducing it to the cake.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gucci906 I can’t open your link but what about using an oblong / square cake card or drum covered with sugarpaste .You could attach half the length of the card/ board onto the back edge of your cake with the other half sitting above the back side of your cake .You could the cover the cake and board/ drum with sugarpaste in one go which would hopefully give you the effect you want .Hope you can understand what I mean sorry this is not the best description ?
