White out cake from Paul,s book of Christmas cakes

Hi, has anyone tried this cake using a fruit cake and marzipan? I think it would work and more so if you baked the wedge without having to carve it? What do you all think?

Hello jgibb

White out is one of my cakes this Christmas, it’s a fruit cake and will be covered in marzipan and icing. I’m curious to know how you’d bake a wedge. Too late for me now as all my fruit cakes were baked some months ago but would be useful to know for other types of cakes and a bonus if it eliminates carving. Or am I being dim?

Hi madeitwithlove, i had not really given it much thought i was going to carve a 10″ fruit in much the same way as Paul did. However, i have been thinking, if i get a deep enough tin i could place it on a slant in the oven, a bit like the wonky cake tins you see only they have something attached to help keep them slanted, maybe another cake tin? I too have made all my other cakes but this has been a last minute one.

Do you think a wonky cake tin would work like this http://www.lakeland.co.uk/p16776/Topsy-Turvy-Cake-Pans
They can be bought individually. I may give it a go now that you’ve planted the idea in my head!! Hubby won’t be too pleased, my cake tins have taken over like triffids. I get last minute wishes too but I won’t be baking any more fruit cakes for Christmas now.
I have another 4k fruit soaking for two christening cakes in February and a small simmnel cake for Easter.

I was thinking wonky pans but looking at the picture in the link i think they would be too shallow, maybe two cakes baked in them and sandwiched together…..hmmm i think it needs a little more planning. I will come back to you if i figure anything out and you can do the same. I may well see you at cake International if you are going?

Yes we’re going for the three days, last outing for the caravan before it goes to bed for the winter.
If I get the pan I’ll experiment. I really dread carving, when I make a mistake I can never manage to stick bits back on. Might see you in Brum! x

Okay had a good think overnight (as you do)…I think if I bake 2 x 8″ square cakes. Keep the tops as flat as possible, then stack and using one cut through on an angle it should make 2 wedge shapes and I can make 2 of them. We are doing 2 Christmas markets in December and I can sell the other one there. Even if it means using a bit of marzipan in between the two layers to get them to stick I am sure people will like them.

You’ll have to let us all know how it turns out. I’ll have a go when we get back from the show, we’re off in the morning! x
