Problems mixing dust oaint

When i tried to make the cc logo for the chanel bag i mixed the dust colour witb vodka; however the paint was either too grainy or when trying to paint the cc the sugar florist paint just would not take the colour -i.e. you could see the background colour. I mixed small amounts but still cannot understand what went wrong?

Also for the” final” touches for the quilted lines you suggest using a paintbrush with water -surely if this water goes outside the lines it will leave a mark on the sugarpaste?

Hello Sky Cakes

Paint several layers of a thicker paste and then allow one layer to dry before applying another.
Another suggestion would be to have the base colour a little more on the brown side to give more depth to the gold paint. Gold dusts vary in colour and strength, it may be that the one you are using is more of the softer type.
If the dust contains little lumps sieve it through first in a small tea strainer before adding the vodka. The lumps may be causing the grainy effect you are experiencing..
For the final touches use a very thin damp, not wet brush, to go in between the lines and water will not get on the rest of the sugarpaste and leave marks.

Hope this helps.

Couple of things. I always uses lemon extract for mixing my paint. If paining gold I makeep the item in pale yellow fondant. Finally if the item is not to be eaten and removed from the cake I would use the decorative metallic dust by Claire Bowman in gold. It’s non toxic so can be used. It really is the best gold on the market. If you are in the USA gateaux inc do a similar product.

Hello Sky Cakes

another thing is to make sure the sugarpaste or gumpaste you are painting is dry before you paint – makes a big difference to how the paste takes the paint. Hope that helps!
