It really depends on the type of trees you want to make, for alternative trees to that shown in the golf scene cake tutorial you could also use the technique used in the following tutorials:

The Princess and the Pea


Grass on golf courses is very manicured so you could just get away with light texturing and shadings. For the rough you could either make strands of fondant or use the hair icing nozzle, a garlic press or if you have a fondant extruder use the disk with lots of holes. Any of these will make multiple strands of icing which can be used as grass. If you prefer, grass can also be piped with royal icing. There are many examples and tutorial for making grass if you google ‘how to make grass from sugarpaste or royal icing’.
