Hi elaine77

The only 12″ square recipe I have baked has been 3″ deep. It depends on what type of cake it is that you are looking for.

I have baked Mrs Jones’ madeira recipe which is in the baking section of the tutorials. My cake was 3″ deep and took 3.5 hours at 130c fan. For a 4″ deep cake, it will take longer so you would need to keep quite a strict eye on the baking once it has reached the 3-hour mark. There is also the risk of the corners burning as these are the vulnerable points of a square cake, I don’t remember using flower nails for the madeira, but I did do for Paul’s moist chocolate cake 10″ square and round.

I would recommend baking such a large cake in thinner layers to avoid the risk of disappointment and lengthy baking time. I hope this helps, please come back if you need more information. 🙂

Hi elaine77

I use the calculator all the time. My hubby and I provided the data. It can be used for any cake, not just for the madeira.

To prevent the corners burning, double line your cake tins. 🙂

The vanilla cake will probably take less time, keep an eye and nose on the bake. 🙂

Hi thanks….thinking now i may split the ingredients in half and bake one half at a time….that way if it doesnt come out well i havent wasted all the ingredients.Gonna do the recipe for the 12x3inch vanilla cake as client doesnt want a tall cake.
