Aubergine flowerpaste

Hi all
I have some flowers to make this week for a wedding cake and the bride would like them an aubergine colour. Does anyone know which colours are best mixed to achieve this colour? Bride isn’t bothered about the shade. Thank you

Hi scarlett

Both Sugaflair and Rainbowdust have aubergine/eggplant petal dust which can be made into a paste and added to sugarpaste. Alternatively mix together small amounts of reds, purples, navy , grape violet, light violet little by little into a small ball of paste until you get the colour aubergine required. These are the colours to play around with. It’s not a solid block colour so if you make it as close to the colour or lighter it can then be shaded with the aubergine petal dust and other colours to lighten or deepen the shade. If the bride isn’t bothered about the shade you could just play around the purples, navy and reds, little by little! A bit of shading would bring the flowers to life, other wise they’ll just look flat and dull. Steam them afterwards to set the colour. Hope this helps. x

That’s brilliant thank you MIWL. My cake stuff order just came today and I have actually got some tubs of the aubergine petal dust but I have never made this into a paste before. Do you mix it with water to get a paste?

Not with water, that will make your paste gooey. Mix it with rejuvenator spirit like when you use it for painting. It can also be add to sugarpaste as a powder and kneaded in. Unfortunately if you are starting with white as a base it may take a long time to reach the shade you want. Try first playing around with the other colours to get to a shade which will be easier to colour. Do small amounts so you’re not wasting ingredients. I play with 10g at a time, keeping track of what I’ve used by writing the amounts down. I’m looking at the aubergines right here in my fridge and seeing purple/violet a little tiny bit of white as the base and gradually building up to darker shades.
If you take a look at my marzipan fruits blog and see the colour of the plum or the grapes, that’s the colour you’re gently aiming for, perhaps not quite as dark if you begin to use the petal dust.

Marzipan Fruits – by madeitwithlove

The colour was achieved using grape violet and Sugarflair extra red. The colours haven’t come out great in the photograph because I didn’t steam or glaze the fruits but you can just see the different tinges. All you can do is play around with the colours, takes a bit of time but worth it in the end. x

ps apologies for mis spelling your name, there’s no edit function at the moment so we can’t correct errors. Frustrating!
