Cake Topper Shelf Life

If you were to sell cake toppers such as the ‘cute baby’ what would be the shelf life on them? Also would you put it was edible or non edible due to the support inside? Any advice would be great, thanks.

Hello carla_coghlan

Gum paste toppers have virtually indefinite shelf life providing they are stored properly, ie out of direct sunlight and out of hot or humid places. They are best stored wrapped in light tissue paper and placed in a sturdy card board box. Some people advocate placing them in air tight plastic container, in my experience this makes them sweat and go sticky if the models haven’t been thoroughly dried out in the first instance. Although the cute baby topper is considered edible it wouldn’t be very good to eat as gum paste dries very hard and serves a better purpose as decoration. The supports inside are required for the topper to hold it’s shape. Pasta can be used if you’d prefer or lolly sticks which are food safe. However, customers need to be informed that the model does have internal supports and they should be kept away from small children who have a habit of biting into objects. It might also be helpful to label any packaging with information to that fact. Hope this helps.
