Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Size of fire engine cake
I’m trying to scale down the fire engine cake, but it’s not going well. The family only want it for 10-12 children. Can anyone help please?

Hi candycakes
I expect by now you have managed to scale down your fire engine. If you haven’t, how about making it from eight inch square cakes ? I suppose if necessary you could even carve the cake out of 6″ square cakes. What is it you feel that is not going well?
Hi madewithlove,
This is a request for a cake in November. Its very warm here again and my brains just not playing. I’m just struggling getting my head around the proportions.
You can follow the tutorial exactly as seen but use smaller cakes to make the vehicle. In the tools section you’ll see templates for the windows, scale them down before downloading them. Take a look at David’s portions chart here:
I think if you make it any smaller than this, the cake will lose it’s WOW factor and every child loves a cake to get excited about? Remember children don’t have tiny pieces of cake like at a wedding, they like a big piece. By the time all the parents get a piece as well there won’t be a lot of cake left. If there is, your customer could freeze down slices to enjoy another day.
Alternatively you could offer a small flat cake with a fire engine topper made with either gumpaste of modelling chocolate. It won’t be quite the same though!
If any of this helps please let me know, if not perhaps we can run through some more ideas and hopefully other members will make more suggestions. x
