Does Marshmallow Fluff Go Bad? Shelf Life and Storage
Hi i have a jar of unopened marshmallow fluff best before date march 2020. It tastes fine is it still ok to use??
CakeFlix Guidance
Does Marshmallow Fluff go bad?
Yes, Marshmallow Fluff can deteriorate or become contaminated, particularly after opening. However, passing its best-before date does not automatically mean it is unsafe. Check the packaging, storage instructions and condition of the product before deciding whether to use it.
At CakeFlix, we would start by checking the exact wording on your jar. A best-before date concerns quality; a use-by date concerns safety. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
How long is Marshmallow Fluff good for?
Follow the date and instructions on your particular pack. There is no reliable universal rule that every jar lasts a set number of months after its printed date.
An unopened jar with an intact seal is different from one that has been repeatedly opened or used with utensils carrying crumbs, buttercream or other ingredients.
The manufacturer’s published FAQ gives storage advice, but does not specify a fixed keeping time after opening. Avoid relying on an unsupported “six months after opening” rule.
Can you use Marshmallow Fluff after its best-before date?
It may still be suitable if it has been stored correctly, the packaging is sound and there are no signs of spoilage. Its texture or flavour may no longer be at its best.
Do not use it if you find mould, an unusual smell, unexplained discolouration, leaking packaging or a damaged seal on a previously unopened jar. Discard the whole contents if mould appears, rather than removing the affected patch.
Do not taste a suspicious product to establish whether it is safe. If you are uncertain about an old jar, contact the manufacturer with its date and batch details.
Does Marshmallow Fluff need refrigerating?
The official Marshmallow Fluff FAQ says it can be stored at room temperature and that refrigeration extends its shelf life.
Follow any instructions on your own jar, keep the lid tightly closed and use clean utensils. Writing the opening date on the lid makes future checks easier.
Does marshmallow cream have the same shelf life?
Other marshmallow creams, homemade versions and ordinary marshmallows can have different ingredients and storage requirements. Follow the guidance for the actual product.
Once Fluff is mixed into a filling, its original shelf life no longer establishes how long that filling keeps. Our guides to buttercream, ganache shelf life and double cream dates explain related considerations.
For a celebration cake, check ingredients before baking day. Explore our CakeFlix Diploma for structured learning to develop your skills.

Hi elaine77
Best before means after that date, the product may not taste as good as if it had been consumed within that time. It doesn’t mean do not consume. The best thing to do is smell it, taste it, and if tastes fine , it probably is fine.
If it says use before, this means do not consume after the given date. ?
