3-tiered wedding cake with calla lilies

Hi, I have been asked to make a 3-tiered wedding cake covered in fondant which is to have calla lollies trailing from the top to the bottom tier. To add to this, the cake will be transported by car some 300 + miles. How would I secure them to the cake a d how can I prevent them from falling off during transit? Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂

Hi clan

I wouldn’t know how to wire trailing callas but you could attach them to the cake in the same way as Paul attached the peony in the Ruffle rose cake tutorial http://www.cakeflix.com/online-cake-decorating-courses/ruffle-rose-wedding-cake. He used posy picks so the cake is protected from the wires in the flowers. You can achieve a trailing effect this way and they would be more secure in transit. How about a practice run on a dummy cake to see how it all looks? Sorry can’t be more useful xx

Just realised I’ve left out the second part of your question. I’m assuming you’ll be transporting stacked cakes???
Boxes for stacked cakes can be found online here http://www.cake-stuff.com/boards-boxes-c2/cake-boxes-c54/stacked-cake-boxes-c142. Try in our own online shop too here http://www.cakeflix.com/shop/product-category/decoration-presentation/cake-boxes/. Packing some bubble wrap gently around the cakes would act as a cushion and minimize damage. Will someone else be transporting and displaying? Some extra replacement flowers would be helpful in case any break. Going back to the callas, you would need to attach the leaves onto individual flowers with florists tape, cut the wire to size, slightly bend at the top before inserting into the posy picks.
I usually pipe a little royal icing into the posy pick before inserting wires. Th royal icing dries hard around the wire and stops it moving about. There is another suggestion here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/attaching-heavy-gumpaste-flower-to-wedding-cake. Finally, place the cake box as flat as possible in the vehicle ( not on seats as they slope) and further cushion the box with something like a duvet to protect it from bumps. The box should be secured if it isn’t being accompanied. It’s nerve racking I know, but yooou’lllll be fine!! x
