attaching a trail of orchids to wedding cake

Hi guys,I am making a 4 tier wedding cake that I have to transport about 40 miles. I am thinking best bet is to transport the tiers before stacking them……cuts down on risk, and stack at the venue. This leaves me wondering do I then attach the orchids at the venue too? The bride has asked for a trail of orchids coming down the cake, stunning to look at but a bit daunting for a wee novice like me! Help, I do want her to be pleased and give her what she would like (shes my niece and this is my gift)

Hi loufairy2

If you’re making individual orchids on wires then yes you could assemble the whole lot at the venue. Might save you some time to have all the cakes ready dowelled and posy picks already in position to slip the flowers into.
Will you be making any filler flowers as well? The poinsettia tutorial http://www.cakeflix.com/online-cake-decorating-courses/poinsettia-flowers is an excellent guide for placement and orchid tutorial if you need to see it is here http://www.cakeflix.com/online-cake-decorating-courses/how-to-make-an-orchid
Good idea to take repair kit with you as well.

Hi Loufairy2

Transport them in a comfortable cardboard cake box lined with lots of soft tissues. Protect the flowers with more tissues especially if you’re going to place them on top of each other and try not to cramp them in too tightly to prevent rubbing. As with the cakes, carry the boxes flat in the boot of the car on no slip silicone mats. The mats can be bought very cheaply in shops like Poundland, Lakelands & market stalls, I think you understand the type I mean. Make extra flowers in case of breakages and start making them as soon as you can so they can dry nice and hard. x
