black fondant

Hall there,I am just working on my Jimmy Choo shoe, and when I used the black fondant the smell wasn´t nice and the taste even worth. For the shoe it does not matter it´s renshaw fondant but in general if I want to use black fondant is there a brand that does black, that taste´s good. And the sugar paste was very hard and brittle is that normal ? Thank you

I have found that Renshaw black sugar paste does have a bit of a different taste to it. It’s not awful, but I do think it tastes different. I think it must be the amount of colour they add to make it black. I wouldn’t worry about it – lots of people (me included!) peel the sugar paste off anyway. As madeitwithlove has said, flower paste is hard and brittle. It needs a good amount of work to get it pliable, and some trex really helps. You can buy it in Asda and Tesco 🙂

Hi Lola88

I’ve never experienced really bad smells from Renshaw’s or any other black bought fondant. I’ve experienced it with home dyed sugarpaste. Making black needs such a lot of colour that it can taste funny, although again have not had this experience with bought. Unusual for black to be hard and brittle, normally it’s much softer and stretchier due to the large mount of dye. I’m wondering whether perhaps it hadn’t been store properly before you bought it, or if it could have had a small un-noticable tear in the packaging causing air to dry it out. Have you got any other unopened black left to compare with? I’m sure other members will share their experience.

Yes flower paste can be very hard and needs kneading to soften it. I use the Squires Kitchen flower paste and can’t say I’ve had any really unpleasant smells coming from it. You can soften it with a little trex, but if it has tiny hard bits, these are extremely difficult to eradicate. Might be worth giving that company some feed back on your experience of their paste. If you fancy making your own just type in the search box ‘flower paste’ there are several pages of different answers, ‘Clark Baxter’ for a recipe, ‘Squires Paste’ and ‘Mallow Russ’. Keep scrolling down to each question, answers make for interesting reading and might be helpful. Hope you find something to suit you and better luck with your next purchase.
