how long can you keep a fruit cake before marzipan is applied

I’ve just marzipanned a rich fruit cake my mother in law made over 6 weeks ago. She kept it stored well wrapped in several layers of greaseproof paper. She always makes her fruit cakes weeks in advance before covering.
