Hamish – The Sequel

Am shortly embarking on a “Hamish!” but would appreciate a bit more info. First, what are the biscuity things Paul is using for Hamish’s head? Secondly, what amount of Sugarpaste is estimated for his coat? 1Kg, 2Kg? More? Don’t want to run out before completion. Any advice much appreciated.

Hello headrabbit

The biscuity things are rice krispy treats which can be bought in supermarkets, or you could make your own, there are recipes in ‘Rice krispy treats’ under the popular questions heading. As for the amount of fondant, looks like a couple of kg to me. I know when I knead up 1.5kg it looks smaller than the amount shown on the tutorial. I may be wrong, but you can’t run out of the colour! I always knead up far more than I need then try and use up the spare fondant on some thing else. I’ve been pretty lucky so far inasmuch that any spare coloured fondant has had a use. That ricer Paul used is great, I wish I had bought one of those instead of a fondant former. May be not …. hmm he did say you need muscles to use it, something I possess not! Look forward to seeing the finished cake, hope it’ll be soon!

Hello R,
Many thanks for info on Rice Krispy Treats – I just couldn’t catch what Paul was saying on the tutorial which was one of the early ones before the ingredients list was added.
Agree, it looks at least a couple of Kilos or more of Sugarpaste to me too – I’m going for an orange coat for the beast and as I’m having to order it shortly, reckon I’ll have to get 3 or even a belt-and-braces 4Kg to be on the safe side. But with the Christmas cake season fast approaching, I don’t suppose any left over will go to waste – the angels could have a spray tan, couldn’t they?.
I got a ricer which has gears and preliminary trials have been quite successful, giving acceptable shaggy results without too much strain. Mind you, with the predicted weight of the fondant, I could be in danger of having a heart attack trying to lift it! 😉
Happy Baking!

Headrabbitt!!

I’ve been screeching with hysterical laughter here at this time of the night! I suppose I shall have to face the wrath of my neighbours in the morning for awakening their two year old brute of a baby. Colour sounds really, hum, interesting and more besides, so do the spray tanned angels! You’ll have to get yourself down to the gym and get to grips with a little weight lifting in readiness for hoisting the ricer, a run around the block for cardio vascular excercise may prevent the anticipated heart attack. This cake decorating lark requires a lot of preparation in fitness, once fit happy baking!

I need help with Hamish’s head! I haven’t managed to locate any biscuity things that look the same size as Paul’s, only Kellogs Rice Krispies Squares. Not a problem if I knew the dimensions of the head – I can make a guess but would welcome some more precise guidance. Any input much appreciated 🙂

Hi headrabbit

The treats in the tutorial are the kellog’s ones. They come six squares in a pack, Paul has stacked two packs together and used a further three squares (I think!) for the snout. He has carved a small amount off just to get the shape. Any good?? I don’t know what each small square measures.

Hello R,
Many thanks for your message but I have been unable to find the Treats. Tesco don’t do them (they don’t even do Kellogs Squares, only their own). I spent the best part of half an hour in Sainsburys this afternoon looking for them but gave up. Unless someone who has made Hamish or the management can come up with some advice I’ll just have to take a stab at estimating it. 🙂
