Head too heavy!

Hi Paul! I tried to do this lovely cake, but when I finish staking the cake, the weight of the head was too heavy that it pushed down the body of the bear, so at the end, the head seemed to be touching the feet… Do you know how I could avoid this problem in the next try?? Thank you! I love your cakes by the way! Congrats

Hi, I have not made this myself, but could you not put a card under the head and then put dowels through the body thus supporting the head.
I am sure miwl, will give you a good answer as well as other members..
Good luck with future bears.

HI!
I have made the teddy cake, and did not have any problems at all. What kind of cake were you using? I used an oil based vanilla sponge, with white chocolate ganache. I used paul’s cut outs, and the structure was quite sturdy. Maybe the head was a bit on the large side? xx

Hello I made the cake with chocolate and ganache and it held but have not tried a vanilla sponge recipe for this.
Kirsty what is the oil based recipe you use for vanilla sponge

I use the following:

3 cups self raising flour
1.5 cups caster sugar
1tsp baking powder
1tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup oil
1 cup full fat milk
4 eggs

This makes an 8″ round cake. I cook it at 150, and it takes about 1.5 hours – it is a deep cake, about 3″ high.

Hi everyone! @ Jackie: Thank you for the tip!!! I’ll try with the dowels, it should work!
@ kirsty: I used chocolate sponge cake with bavarois… Maybe I pushed too hard when I placed the head into the body, or too much filling??

I think ganache is much denser so supports the head better. It is possible the Bavarious might have been too light and soft and just let it slip. I had no problems either, have another go and see if a stiffer filling works better.
