How to make a gumpaste ball chair

Hi can anyone help please. I need to make a half ball chair or globe chair i think they’re called as a cake topper with a figurine of a girl sitting in it.

I think I have bitten off more than I can chew by saying that I could do it.

Anyone have any advice please

Hi gucci906

The easiest way to make the shape of the chair is to line a round bottomed ceral bowl with either pastillage or gumpast. Roll the paste out to the thickness you’d like the chair to be. Liberally dust the bowl with cornflour and line it smoothly with the paste. Cut of the excess overhang and soften off the hard cut edge. Allow the paste to dry but as it does, keep it moving around so that it doesn’t stick hard to the bowl. Before the the paste dries out completely it can be lined again with a contrasting colour to form a luxurious lining. Once dry remove from the ceral bowl and either make a pedestal base for it to sit on or adhere it to the surface it is intended to go on.
I had one of these chairs back in the 1960’s . The interior was padded and it had a thick cushion inside to make it more comfy. My chair had a diamond pattern lining with small push in buttons which gave it a luxury feel. You could if you wanted do the same to the lining of your topper chair. Some of these chairs are on a pedestal base. If you want the base it will have to be made separately and the two pieces attached together with either tempered chocolate or with royal icing. Please let me know if any of this makes sense or if it helps. I haven’t been able to find a tutorial.
Take a look in google images at ball chairs to get your imagination going! x

Thank you I did think of pastillage but isn’t it very fragile? I need to put a figurine inside. I have done some research and found hollow half ball styrophome spheres. I think I might take the easy way out and cover that in sugarpaste. It’s for a keepsake on its own board so doesn’t need to be fully edible.
Many thanks for your help

Pastillage is much stronger than gumpaste and dries much more quickly. If you’re going to use the styrofoam ball you can just use gumpaste. Glad you’re sorted!
