How to stack pillow cakes

I am thinking of having a go at doing a tiered pillow cake but I am unsure whether I need a board in between each cake and if so how do I do this without the board showing, can anyone advise me please?

Hi Nickyf

Yes, each cake does have to have it’s own board. My local cake shop had pillow cakes on display, they used smaller boards (which had been covered in fondant), to just fit the square part of the cake. You’d have to use dowels as well so just follow Paul’s tutorial on dowelling in the wedding cake section in the library.

Hi Madeitwithlove

Thank you, I will give it a go and see how it turns out!

Hi Nickyf,

Madeitwithlove is spot on – I used a cake card just large enough to cover the surface where the cakes meet but small enough that you don’t see it . If I remember correctly, I used a 6 inch cake card at the bottom of a 10 inch carved pillow and it was just about right – if you make it a doublethick card rather than a drum it’s easier to hide.

And dowelling is a must (you can rely on madeitwithlove for sound advice!!).

Would love to see how you get on 🙂

So would I love to hear some feed back. I’m not clever enough to even attempt it, although the heart IS willing!
