Silver spoon ready to roll icing

Hello

Just wondering if anyone else had used the silver spoon ready to roll icing? I do cake decorating as a hobby so sometimes it’s easier/cheaper just to pick up some sugar paste in the supermarket rather than shop online. The silver spoon stuff was on offer in Sainsburys so I thought I would try it, however I didn’t put it near my cake! It tasted quite nice, it was nice and white, but I couldn’t knead it, it kept cracking. Thankfully I had a spare Dr Oetker one in the cupboard. Any one else had experience of this?

Hi Lorna

I do cake decorating as a hobby as well and did 2 wedding cakes in August for friends of my daughters. I used the Silver Spoon and had no problems with it . Up to now I have used Asda, Tesco and Silverspoon brands and they all seem similar.

Hi Lorna

The icing would have eventually come together if you kept kneading, a little trex also helps. I’ve had problems with Sainbury’s roll out icing, now if I get it, I store it some where warm so it loosens up a bit. I never use the supermarket icings for covering cake but they are handy for making gumpaste for small models. I know other members have mentioned using Tesco icing which is considered quite acceptable for icing cakes. I too only bake and decorate as a hobby, it does get expensive.

Thank you both. Will have another go with it, it just seemed pretty hard to work with!
