steam punk balloons

Can anyone point me in the right direction to make the hot air balloons or helium balloons that are so popular at the moment? This is really stretching my little grey matter and any advice will be gratefully received

Hello lyndaplatts

Can’t help you with steampunk but have a look at some of these images http://cakecentral.com/g/a/3377444/sweet-treats-challenge-14/ you may be able to get some ideas. There’s a really good tutorial in youtube by laurapoopie on how to make gum paste balloons which I guess could be adapted. Do the balloons have to be edible or can they perhaps be made from scrapbook materials? Or perhaps with gelatine bubbles? There are many tutorials in youtube on making gelatine bubbles. Perhaps you’ll be able to adapt some of them. There’s a steampunk cake tutorial without balloons here http://www.instructables.com/id/STEAMPUNK-STYLE- FONDANT-CAKE/ I expect you have seen it already, but in case you haven’t! Sorry can’t be more help. x

Thank you so much made with love. It’s great to have some other thought processes and advice. Once I can get it cracked, (not literally) I will let you know!

Fabulous looking creations, I’d love to know how they do it. I had another thought along the lines of rice krispie treats to make the balloons, but how would they stay up? How do they keep any of it up? I hope you do ‘crack’ it, can’t wait to see what you come up with. x

Finally figured out the key search words to use. Try here for lots of discussion https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=cr&ei=vO1RUtz3HMO70QWMq4G4Cw#q=how+to+support+a+hot+air+balloon+cake There are some quite helpful tips in amongst the different links which the discussion groups suggest.

Hi i dont know if this would be of any help to you at all but having read your question it put me in mind of something i saw in a book i have. It isn a steam punk design but is a hot air balloon which has been made from gelatine icing shaped on an easter egg mould and the balloon was suspended by a lampshade support to keep it upright and fixed onto the cake with royal icing. The book was first published in the late eighties so so it is quite an old one. Hope that helps a little
