Toolbox cake

Has anyone made a toolbox cake? My Dads 75th is coming up and thought this would be nice since he was a carpenter to trade. I’ve got the moulds for chocolate saws etc but would love an idea for the box and lid.? Maybe a course idea??!

Hi Therese1

Just wondered whether this could be useful for a few ideas http://www.cakesbylynz.co.uk/index.php/2012/03/tool-box-cake/. It’s not a tutorial but the dialogue may help. There are several tool box images in google. I’m not sure whether you want a modern tool box or the old fashioned trugg type. If I was making it, I’d follow the shoe box tutorial to get the shape of the box, then either make an open lid with styrofoam or rice krispie treats and have the tools poking out. The easier way would be to do the open type with a wooden handle or you could try and copy the type your dad used. If I catch sight of anything else I’ll post again.

Great, thanks for these tips. I like the idea of using the Rice Krispies for the lid because I couldn’t work out how it would stay “open” otherwise! As well as the “proper” toolbox, he used an old brown wooden suitcase type box with hinges and the metal corner “protection” so I may head down that route!
thanks again
