Weight on cake drums

Hi, I’m making a 4 tier choc wrap (12+10+8+6) this week and am putting it on an 18″ cake drum. My potential problem is that the cake stand is more of a metal ring, so there’s nothing in the centre of it. I’m a bit concerned as to whether the drum is strong enough to take the weight without sagging/caving in. Does anyone know for sure the maximum weight they are supposed to take? I’m trying to avoid having to faff about getting a piece of plywood cut as I’ve left it rather late in the day to be doing this! Thanks

Hi, me again. I’ve sorted out my own problem – a dowelled 6″ cake dummy with a 6″ cake drum on top is exactly the right height, so I’ll slot that in the large space to give support to the cake – the dowels in the dummy should be a good support.

Hi loobianca

That’s a useful piece of information, thanks for sharing. It’ll come in handy for other members who may have to face a similar problem. x

Hi MIWL, Yes! It worked! The cake ended up about 32″ tall and weighed a ton – the dowelled dummy + drum in the centre of the hollow cake stand did it’s job, thankfully lol!

I bet it was a sight to behold, what a shame we can’t all see it, well done you!! x
