Why cover the teddy bear cake with fondant?

My question is why do you cover the teddy bear cake with fondant before you pipe the fur? Couldn’t you pipe the fur dirtily in the ganache?

Hi
Covering the bear in fondant keeps the bears head and body together and gives you a better finish as any gaps in the buttercream won’t be very noticeable.

It also makes transferring the bear onto the board safer. As nigel-mellon says, it holds the bear together as a complete cake. Ganache can crack which may cause the bear to fall apart.
