Carousel Cake with lights

Hi,

I’m going to make the carousel cake from Pauls course to use at a wedding fair. I’m going to make it all with dummies so it will last for different shows. My question is in the course Paul talks about putting in led lights in the roof. Has anyone done this & how did you do it so it can be switched off & if needed batteries changing? Paul said about putting them into the roof but once its done then you can not get into it. I was watching ace of cakes & Duff uses mini led lights with magnets to hold them in place I thought that this could work but I can not find them anywhere to buy.

Thank you
Dan.

Hi chefdan
Don’t know if this will help but try Bakesfromheaven.co.uk they sell led lights for cakes and maybe able to help you.

Thank you JustJennys, after doing some more searching I’ve found balloon lights, they are small battery led lights that go into balloons. I think I can attach them to the under side of the roof so they can not be seen. Then I can replace the battery when they run out.

Hello Dan

I use this company for all my lights http://www.glow.co.uk/indoor-string-lights.html
A string of battery operated lights would work or you can get individual stud lights which disco twinkle.
If you google lights for carousel cake you’ll see lots of images and discussions on how other people have added lights to cakes. I’m making the cake too for a double Christening in February so any feed back from you would be fantastic! xx

Hi madewithlove, I’m going to see if I can get these led lights that go inside balloons to work as they are small they should be easier to hide. I’m just waiting for the dummies to arrive then I’ll start working on it. I have already got a turntable I think the one Paul uses cost £200 plus so after searching I found one at www.turntable360.com for £30 inc delivery they are not from the UK but when I ordered I asked for a UK voltage & they sent it with a UK plug on. Also I ordered it on 20th December & it arrived on the 27th so considering there was a weekend & christmas day it arrived very fast.

Hi chefdan

Thank you so much for posting the turntable link and all the other information too. I was just going to use a lazy susan, but of course that would never be the same as a self propelling turntable! Wow you’ve been really busy sourcing all your tools. I need to get on with mine, need the cake for Feb 2. Thanks again x

Hi, I’ve just finished the carousel cake, if you want to look at it, it is on my facebook page with a short video of it on the revolving stand. My facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/ChefDansCustomCakes

Hi chefdan

I just had a look, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I completed two weeks ago for the christening and also used the same revolving stand from the link you kindly posted.
We’ve used same colours and some similar decorations. I don’t have many moulds so made my own using biscuit packaging compartments and chocolate box compartments. I made a six point roof and pink LED lights. It was fun improvising the moulds, worked out really well and didn’t cost anything
There were over a hundred guests at the Christening, many pregnant ladies, now all wanting the same!!
I don’t have facebook page so can’t show you how mine turned out. Well done, hope it made you lots of orders, and thanks again for the link.

Hi madeitwithlove
Could you let me know where you got your pink light for the carousel cake please? Also how do you arrange them so you can hide the string of the lights?
Many thanks

Hi Maria

Mine were a cheap set of 20 battery opeated lights bought by the customer. I don’t know where she got them from but probably somewhere like Poundland. November time they would have had them in stock for Christmas. I just put them in the roof area and concealed the battery pack in amongst the wires. If you do it this way, go for clear wires as the coloured ones look dreadful.

Since I made my carousel cake, lighting has becoming more sophisticated. There are lights available now which are wire free and can be inserted individually. Here are a couple of links which might help to source lights and also look in Amazon for led lights for cakes:

Have a look also at some of the tutorials where Paul uses light effects. Most of them are in the novelty section

Cake stuff have light kits for cake, I’ve not used them and don’t know how they are utilised.

Hope some of this helps.
